VALENCIA (SPAIN) LSE (SPANISH SIGN LANGUAGE) AND THE LSE INTERPRETER The sign language interpreter is a professional who can allow direct communication between deaf and hearing people who use sign language and spoken language respectively. This way deaf people can be self-sufficient and have the right to choose. The first interpreting service established in Spain was set up in Madrid in 1987. During many years, in Spain, the training of interpretes was carried out by deaf organisations or federations. It was not until 1995 that the official title for sign language interpretes was stablished by law nationwide, and it would be a few years later that the training in the secondary schools actually started. In our region, Valencia, this training is provided in the capital (Valencia) in two centres: Edetania and another public centre. During this academic year, 2003-04, the third generation of intepreters will receive their title after two years of intensive training. The main provider of sign language interpreting services nowadays in Valencia is de Valencian Federation of the deaf (FESORD C.V. ). Edetania has an agreement with this federation and collaborates with them for the training of interpreters, in fact some of the teachers in the interpreters course come from FESORD.
